Deformity of the external nose

A deformity of the external nose is any abnormality in its shape, symmetry or proportions. It can be congenital, post-traumatic or result from co-occurring diseases.

Types of nose deformities
  1. Nose deviation – slanted nose
  2. Nose hump
  3. Saddle nose
  4. Laterally displaced nose
  5. Overgrown/lumpy nose
Causes of nose deformity
  • Congenital defects – e.g. cleft palate and lip.
  • Injuries – fractures, sports injuries, post-operative complications.
  • Diseases – inflammatory (e.g. Wegener’s granulomatosis), cancer, rosacea.
  • Complications after procedures – unsuccessful nose plastic surgery (rhinoplasty).

Diagnosis and treatment of nose deformities

Diagnosis of nose deformity
  • ENT examination – assessment of the shape of the nose and the patency of the nasal cavities.
  • Computed Tomography (CT) – if required
Nose Deformity Treatment
  • Surgical correction (rhinoplasty, septoplasty) – in case of aesthetic and functional defects.
  • Conservative therapy – in some inflammatory and post-traumatic conditions (e.g. steroids, antibiotics).
  • Fillers (e.g. hyaluronic acid) – in mild deformations without the need for surgery.
