Sleep-related breathing disorders in adults are a broad group of conditions that can lead to serious health consequences.

The most common sleep breathing disorders in adults
  1. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)

Diagnosis of Sleep Disordered Breathing in Adults
  • ENT examination
  • Polysomnography (PSG) – a complete sleep study.
  • Polygraphy – a simplified version of monitoring breathing during sleep.
  • WatchPat – home sleep study
    Treatment:
  • Weight loss, avoidance of alcohol and sleeping pills.
  • CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machines.
  • In some cases, surgical treatment (e.g. UPPP, nasal septum correction).

Sleep disordered breathing in children should be diagnosed and treated as early as possible. If left untreated for a long time, they can lead to serious health consequences and disorders in the child’s psychomotor development.

The Most Common Sleep Breathing Disorders in Children

Diagnosis of sleep-related breathing disorders in children
  • Polysomnography (PSG) – a standard sleep study that monitors breathing, oxygen levels, heart rate, and brain activity.
  • Polygraphy – a simplified version of the test (without EEG).
  • WatchPat – Home Sleep Study
Treating Sleep-Disordered Breathing in Children
  • Drug treatment – ​​e.g. intranasal corticosteroids for mild cases, if no conservative treatment has been attempted so far
  • In case of tonsillar hypertrophy – adenotonsillotomy (removal of the palatine tonsils and/or removal of the pharyngeal tonsil).
  • Weight loss – crucial in obese children.
  • CPAP or BiPAP – a device that assists breathing in more severe cases.
