Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure to correct the eyelids. It can involve both the upper and lower eyelids, and its goal is to remove excess skin, fat, and sometimes muscle to improve the appearance of the eye area and rejuvenate the face.

Types of blepharoplasty
  1. Upper eyelid blepharoplasty – removes excess skin and fat tissue, improving appearance and sometimes even field of vision.
  2. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty – reduces bags under the eyes, removes excess skin and reduces the visibility of wrinkles.
Indications for the procedure
  • Drooping eyelids, limiting the field of vision
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Excess skin causing a tired look
  • Aesthetic facial rejuvenation
The course of the procedure
  • The procedure lasts about 1–2 hours and is performed under local or general anesthesia.
  • The surgeon makes incisions in the natural creases of the eyelids to make the scars as invisible as possible.
  • Excess skin and fat are removed and the wound is sutured with thin stitches.

Recovery, complications, advantages of blepharoplasty

Convalescence
  • Swelling and bruising may persist for 1–2 weeks.
  • Return to daily activities usually occurs after about 10 days.
  • The full effects are visible after a few weeks, when the swelling disappears.
Possible complications
  • Bleeding and infections (rare)
  • Scars – Scars are usually hidden in natural creases, but in rare cases they can be visible
  • Sensory disturbances in the area of the incision (usually temporary)
Advantages of blepharoplasty
  • Positive functional effect:
    • Better field of vision – in people with drooping eyelids, the procedure can significantly improve the quality of vision.
    • Reduction of the feeling of heavy eyelids – excess skin can cause discomfort, tired eyes and headaches, which often disappear after the procedure.
  • Positive aesthetic effect:
    • Facial rejuvenation – removing excess skin and fat makes the eyes look more rested and fresh.
    • Reduction of bags under the eyes – blepharoplasty of the lower eyelids eliminates excess fat tissue, eliminating the effect of “tired eyes”.
    • Accentuating the shape of the eyes – after the treatment, the eyelids are firmer and more symmetrical, which improves the proportions of the face.
  • Long-lasting effects – The effects of the treatment last for many years and in some cases are permanent

Blepharoplasty has many advantages, both aesthetic and functional. If drooping eyelids are a problem, it is worth consulting a plastic surgeon, ophthalmologist, or otolaryngologist.
