Eustachian tube balloon dilatation (ETBD) is considered a relatively safe and minimally invasive procedure, but like any medical procedure, it may be associated with certain complications.

Here are the possible side effects and risks:

• Pain and discomfort – After the procedure, patients may feel mild to moderate pressure or pain in the ear and nasopharynx.
• Nosebleeds – Due to the insertion of the balloon through the nose, minor bleeding may occur, which usually stops on its own.
• Tympanosclerosis – in rare cases, changes in the eardrum, fibrosis or scarring may occur.
• Perforation of the tympanic membrane – a very rare complication that can occur if the Eustachian tube is severely obstructed and excessive pressure builds up in the middle ear.
• Incomplete improvement or recurrence of the problem – in some patients the procedure may not bring the expected results and it is necessary to repeat it.
• Infections – As with any ENT procedure, there is a minimal risk of infection, but it is rare.
