Functional rhinoplasty in adults

Functional rhinoplasty

Functional rhinoplasty is a surgery to improve nasal patency by changing the structure of the external nose (rhinoplasty) and correcting the nasal septum (septoplasty). This procedure is performed primarily for medical reasons to restore normal nasal breathing.

Indications for functional rhinoplasty
  • Deformation of the nose after trauma or congenital
  • Curved nasal septum causing difficulty breathing
  • Chronic nasal obstruction resistant to pharmacological treatment
  • Frequent sinus infections associated with impaired nasal ventilation
  • Chronic rhinosinusitis
  • Snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (if the cause is abnormal nasal anatomy)
  • Problems with equalizing pressure in the ears (e.g. in divers, pilots)
    Preparation for the procedure:
  • ENT consultation and assessment of indications with photographic documentation
  • Imaging tests (computed tomography of the sinuses) if required
  • Blood tests and anesthesia consultation
  • Discontinuation of blood-thinning medications (e.g. aspirin, clopidogrel)

The course, advantages, recovery after rhinoseptoplasty surgery

The course of the operation
  1. Anesthesia – usually general
  2. Making external or intranasal incisions, tissue preparation
  3. Septoplasty – surgical straightening of the nasal septum by removing or repositioning deformed fragments of cartilage and bone
  4. Correction of external nose structures:
  5. Closing surgical wounds with sutures
  6. Introduction of an intranasal tamponade (optional) to limit bleeding
Advantages of functional rhinoseptoplasty
  • Improved nasal breathing
  • Reduction in snoring and improved sleep quality
  • Reduction in the frequency of sinus infections
  • Better quality of life and greater daily comfort
  • Possibility of simultaneous improvement of the appearance of the nose
Post-surgery recovery
  • Hospitalization: 1-2 days (usually discharged the same day)
  • Removal of dressings: after 1-3 days (if used)
  • Return to normal activity: after 1-2 weeks
  • Avoid physical exertion: for approx. 6 weeks
  • Rinsing the nose with saline to clean the nose and accelerate healing
  • Use of healing ointments
Possible complications
  • Post-operative bleeding
  • Swelling and bruising
  • Temporary disorders of the sense of smell
  • Rare: infections, nasal septum perforation

Functional rhinoseptoplasty is an effective procedure that improves nasal patency and quality of life. If nasal obstruction makes everyday functioning difficult, you have had a nose injury in the past or your nose has been deformed since birth – it is worth consulting an otolaryngologist to consider surgery.
