Otoplasty in children and adults

Correction of protruding ears - otoplasty in children and adults

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure to correct protruding or deformed ears. It is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgeries, especially among children and adolescents, but also among adults who want to improve the aesthetics of their ears.

This procedure allows you to restore the proportional appearance of your ears in relation to the rest of your face.

Indications for otoplasty
  • Protruding ears that can cause complexes and decreased self-confidence
  • Auricle deformities resulting from injuries or congenital abnormalities
  • Ear asymmetry
  • Aesthetic problems that can negatively affect your appearance and perception by others

Course, recovery after otoplasty surgery

The course of the operation
  1. The procedure lasts 60-90 minutes
  2. Anesthesia – usually local with sedation (in adults) or general (in children)
  3. Incision – the surgeon makes an incision on the back of the ear, making the scar less visible.
  4. Reshaping the cartilage – the surgeon shapes the cartilage of the auricle so that the ears come closer to the head, removing excess tissue or reshaping the shape of the cartilage.
  5. Closing the wound – dissolvable or standard stitches, depending on the needs, to maintain the obtained shape.
  6. Applying a dressing – a special bandage is placed on the ears, which maintains the new shape of the ear during healing.
Recovery
  • Time hospitalization: 1 day
  • Bandaging: After surgery, a protective bandage is applied to the ears for several days.
  • Healing time: Full healing takes about 2-3 weeks.
  • Avoiding pressure on the ears: For several weeks, avoid situations in which the ears may be hit or excessively pressed (e.g. sleeping on your side).
  • Return to work or school: usually after 1-2 weeks
  • Pain and swelling: may occur for a few days, but are usually relieved by painkillers.
Possible complications
  • Bleeding and infection (rare)
  • Ear displacement – rare, but may require additional correction
  • Scarring – scars are usually hidden behind the ears, but in rare cases they can be visible or grow over the ears (so-called keloids)
  • Sensation loss in the area of the incision (usually temporary)
Advantages of otoplasty
  • Improved appearance – the ears are closer to the head, which improves facial proportions.
  • Self-confidence – the procedure often improves self-esteem, especially in children who experience problems in their peer group due to the shape of their ears.
  • Long-lasting effects – after a successful operation, the effects are permanent, and the ears do not return to their previous shape.

Otoplasty is an effective method of improving the aesthetics of the ears, which improves the patients’ psychological comfort and allows them to feel better. If protruding ears are a problem, it is worth consulting a plastic surgeon or otolaryngologist.
