Plastic surgery of the palate and middle pharynx, or uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP), is a surgical procedure to widen the airway at the level of the throat by removing excess tissue, such as the palatine tonsils, parts of the soft palate and possibly the uvula, and to reshape the middle pharynx with sutures.
It is mainly used to treat snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
UPPP is an effective method of treating snoring and sleep apnea in patients with anatomical obstructions in the throat. However, some patients may require additional treatment, such as CPAP therapy or other surgical procedures.
If snoring or sleep apnea is causing chronic fatigue and health problems, it is worth consulting an ENT or sleep medicine specialist.
