Septoplasty in adults

Nasal septum plastic surgery - septoplasty

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure to correct a deviated nasal septum in order to improve nasal patency and breathing comfort. Unlike rhinoplasty, which also includes the aesthetic aspect of the nose, septoplasty is a functional operation, including intranasal changes.

It is performed to remove obstacles to the free flow of air through the nasal cavities.

Indications for septoplasty
  • Deviated nasal septum, impeding breathing
  • Frequent sinus infections associated with impaired nasal ventilation
  • Chronic nasal obstruction, not amenable to pharmacological treatment
  • Snoring and obstructive sleep apnea
  • Frequent nosebleeds
  • Problems with equalizing pressure in the ears (e.g. in divers, pilots)

The course and recovery after septoplasty

The course of the operation
  1. Duration of the procedure 30-60 minutes
  2. Anesthesia – usually general, less often local
  3. Incision inside the nose – the surgeon makes an incision on the nasal mucosa
  4. Septum correction – removal or reposition of deviated fragments of cartilage and bone
  5. Wound closure – suturing of the mucosa
  6. Septal plates and nasal tamponade (optional) – to prevent bleeding and stabilize the septum
Recovery after septoplasty
  • Hospitalization time: 1 day
  • Removal of dressings (if used): after 1-3 days
  • Swelling and nasal congestion: subside in within 1-2 weeks
  • Avoid physical exertion: for 4-6 weeks
  • No blowing your nose: for the first 2 weeks
  • Rinse your nose with saline: several times a day to speed up healing
  • Full regeneration of the mucous membrane: up to 3 months
Possible complications
  • Postoperative bleeding
  • Infections (rare)
  • Temporary disorders of smell
  • Perforation of the nasal septum (rare)

Septoplasty improves nasal patency but does not change the appearance of the nose. The surgery effectively improves the quality of breathing, reduces the risk of sinus infections and improves sleep comfort.

If a deviated nasal septum makes breathing difficult and causes recurring health problems, it is worth consulting an otolaryngologist.
